I was working as an actress at The Theatre Royal, Stratford East and became one of three founding members of a team called Actors Shop. I think we were probably the first people to take our skills out of the theatre and into business – and it was the beginning of something that has shaped and developed me and my career. I have a very busy working life as I still work as an actress and over the last twenty years have focussed mainly on work in television – I call it my life in crime as my work includes playing Inspector Christine Fraser in over 100 episodes of \'The Bill \', Barbara McKenzie the child protection officer in 7 series of Lynda la Plant \'s \'Trial & Retribution \' and most recently Coop the Judge \'s clerk in \'Judge John Deed \'. I have worked across many sectors of business both in the UK and abroad using what I have learnt and experienced as an expert in behaviours, voice and communication skills. I specialise in working at very senior level and love working with clients to find their own individual style to then help them communicate with confidence whether it be at a presentation, meeting, media interview, after dinner speech or as a leader of a team. I believe that in this technological world where we work and live in communities that embrace different cultures and language – we can develop our communication to a new level. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search Bullying and Harassment Sadly bullying and harassment are increasingly common in the workplace. They can start as accepted behaviours in specific departments and the pattern of behaviour then spreads across an entire organisation. Frequently the “Bullies” don’t realise what they’re doing. They may have no idea of the effect of their behaviour which is often learned and goes hand in glove with pressure of work. Similarly, those who are bullied are often reluctant to identify it and will suffer the behaviour until they get to the point where they either leave or make a formal complaint. As a result there is rarely an opportunity to work on the behaviours and dynamics of those involved in order to solve the problem. Our experiential, interactive, practical approach allows delegates to explore these delicate subjects and reach a common understanding of desired practice in a safe non-judgemental environment. How is our approach different? The answer: - Practicality, usability, speed and impact, in other words people like us because our methods focus on developing practical skills and we get immediate results. All of our methods, tools and techniques have one purpose, to make the person, team or organisation get better at what they do no matter where they start from. Four Goals To build the skills and behaviours needed to perform better. For example how to stay focussed and single-minded; how to be genuinely assertive yet gracious with others; how to challenge and still be constructive; how to compete and be able to contribute to a team. To develop the mental strengths of resilience, robustness, a sense of fun, vitality, graciousness, persistence, challenge and inspiration. To use feelings and emotions to support objectives and how to control negative emotions that inhibit performance and affect others. Our final goal is self mastery i.e. to help people and teams to become their own coach so they have the tools to constantly keep on improving. Introduction to coaching As with all our workshops these are built around the needs and experiences of the participants. These workshops typically begin with an exploration of what coaching is and why and when it is appropriate. We also promote appropriate coaching models which form a sound foundation for new coaches. Although at this stage it is far too early to introduce the concepts of the psychological tools which we advocate for experienced coaches, we lay the foundations by identifying behaviours and exploring their influence. The use of either Forum Theatre and or role play as skills practice enables the participants to learn through experience. These workshops often include elements of the following: • communication skills techniques • listening skills • clarity • confidence • dealing with anxiety Coaching – psychological skills A programme to enhance the effectiveness of experienced coaches Through these programmes we help to maximise the effectiveness of experienced coaches and managers with the introduction of a series of psychological coaching skills. Effective communication skills and the use of coaching models lead to effective coaching in ordinary circumstances. However there are many situations which coaches experience during which those skills alone prove ineffective. This is when these Psychological coaching skills can be used to achieve fast and effective results. Here is a list of the type of coaching interaction which can be improved by using these skills: • When the coachee has no goal • When the coachee doesn’t want to be coached • When the coachee has more knowledge than the coach • In difficult circumstances • When coaching difficult people Assessment and Development Centres | Bullying and Harassment |Coaching the Coaches Diversity | Embracing Organisational Change | Living the Values Management Development and Leadership | Team Development | Time Management ©2007 McEwan Associates Ltd by mattbray.com Cookies | Contact",11);arrFiles[19]=new Array(20,"._coaching-the-coachers.htm","14 Jan 2008","._coaching-the-coachers.htm","","","",1);arrFiles[20]=new Array(21,"contact-us.htm","11 Jan 2008","McEwan Associates - Contact us 01258 863555","Personal Impact, Presentation Skills training, Improving your impact, Actors in business, Drama based training, Role play, Forum theatre, Inspirational presentations, Behavioural training, Values, Equality and diversity, McEwan Associates, Leadership, Ma","McEwan Associates Ltd. Despite their informal setting, client presentations require a great deal of care and attention. It is vital that the presenter builds a successful rapport with clients and captures their full interest from the moment they meet. Presenters need to respond to shifts in mood and concentration and ensure key messages are delivered successfully. We help presenters and presentation teams to pitch at the appropriate level to sustain a presentation and give them the confidence to transform a monologue into a purposeful discussion. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search Embracing Organisational Change Most people are consciously/sub-consciously frightened of change even if they can understand the need for it on an intellectual level. This fear can result in negative behaviour patterns and significantly reduced morale, particularly when changes are major and occurring frequently. Change is often distrusted and sometimes even dismissed when not effectively introduced. Employees often act as change blockers while they wait for things to go back to normal rather than change champions moving an organisation forward. Resistance to change can significantly reduce organisational effectiveness and undermine employee security. Through a combination of our psychological and behavioural development, McEwan Associates can break down the barriers to change by clarifying the drivers for change, the emotions that these may arise in the workforce and dispelling the myths and beliefs that are creating negativity. By combining a mix of one to one coaching, group coaching sessions and experiential workshops, we enlighten and enthuse the workforce until the change is owned and actively endorsed. We help release this quality through a combination of developing your successful attributes and eliminating unhelpful ones. We do not simply give advice on what needs to change but, through specific targeted exercises, we ensure the changes happen. We ensure that you feel comfortable, confident, energised and even spontaneous when delivering material so that you enthuse and inspire your listeners. In workshop form we would typically look at: • Identifying your personal presentation style • Understanding your audience’s expectations • Personal preparation • Dealing with nerves and anxiety • Evaluating your skills and attributes • Developing those skills Workshops can never be as personalised as one to one coaching but, where appropriate, we will look as closely as possible at individual needs and the root causes of problems. The advantages of workshop training include observing and learning from the successes and mistakes of others and sharing presentation fears and experiences in a safe environment. Through one to one coaching we focus on meeting an individual’s development needs and unravelling the root causes that lie behind them. Trying to initiate change without addressing the reasons why people behave as they do will only have a very superficial impact. We aim to raise self-awareness in the context of work and develop thoughts and behaviours that ensure potential is realised. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search What is Forum Theatre? Have an experience rather than being instructed. Forum Theatre is a high impact, interactive way to learn. It involves two or more actors improvising a scene. Forums are developed after close liaison with the client and reflect the make-up not only of each organisation, but of specific departments or groups, and can be used as an effective tool for any behavioural development needs. The characters within the scene will encounter problems which they are unable to solve alone. They won’t be communicating in a truly effective way. The participants are charged with untangling the problems and assisting the characters to reach a more desirable outcome than they would have alone. Advice can only be given to one character within a forum and he or she will engage with the group and ask for help. This is because we can only ever change our own behaviour. If we want to change the behaviour of others, we can only do so by altering our own. The same applies with forum theatre. The participants are asked to identify and change behaviours which have a negative impact on the characters. They may be advising on the actual words spoken, body language, tone of voice, the appropriateness of the message being delivered or on attitude. The use of highly trained experienced professional actors ensures that what is seen is a reflection of reality. Forum Theatre works so quickly and effectively as it encourages individuals to see issues from different points of view. It also enables real situations to be portrayed in a more light-hearted manner, enabling the audience to solve problems for the characters which they may find difficult to overcome themselves in a real life situation. Its effectiveness is increased because it is always entertaining and often amusing. As the group are not required to act at all the medium is at once highly participative and safe. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search Graham Hedley Business Psychologist Hi and thanks for looking this far into our website and getting to me. My role is a bit of a specialist one. As you will already know, we are a behavioural training organisation and what I do is train psychological skills to support behavioural change. As an organisation our goals are to train people to have more personal impact, be more effective, be able to deal with all the tough stuff that’s always part of working life, and enjoy work and life a little more. In order to achieve this it is very important to develop the psychological skills to understand situations and other people and how to respond. This is where I come in. Why is developing psychological skills so important? Because thought always takes place before behaviour and behaviour is how other people experience us, becoming more effective, influential and happier doesn’t happen by chance it takes knowledge, skills and action. My background, experience and qualifications My business experience includes roles as Resident Vice President Citibank, Sales Director Legal & General, Head of Customer Services Liverpool Victoria Group. All of these jobs had responsibility for lots of people, multi-million pound budgets and for achieving demanding business targets. Academically, I lecture part time in Work Psychology at Solent University, Southampton and in Advanced Counselling Skills at Wiltshire College. I have three degree’s; first degrees in Business Studies and Psychology and a higher degree in Psychology, hence the MSc and BSc after my name, and my current research project is on the impact of psychological training on personal performance. I also do community work for a charity that supports people who are affected by addictions. I hope this overview is helpful and if you would like to know more then please contact me. I also hope we get to meet and talk so I can tell you more about what we do and how great we are. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search Living the Values Many organisations have devoted considerable time and resources on developing a set of core values to underpin the way they work. In many cases once these values are “launched” they fail to result in the changes that have been expected and have limited impact. Too often employees feel that values are imposed on them rather than owned by them and as a result they are resisted or ignored. Worse still, employees at all levels can feel that these values have hidden ulterior motives which will threaten their existing roles and responsibilities. Our approach is to build awareness of and underpin values with the importance of treating yourself and others with maximum respect at all times. We highlight how this impacts upon everyone in their working day and demonstrate how “ living the values ” benefits everyone in an organisation. The Forum Theatre approach is particularly valuable for clarifying how thoughtless behaviours can have a negative impact on us all, and allows employees to experience what an organisation that is truly living its values feels like. They are able to motivate others and give them direction and all this in addition to ensuring operational effectiveness. Through a combination of one to one coaching and experiential workshops we can help build the leaders that drive an organisation to success. The principles and ideas which form the base of our “Impact on others” programme are also those which are most likely to produce effective leaders. Management Development programmes Our management development work is tailored specifically to the needs, challenges and desires of the managers involved. We work on a 1-1 basis or in groups depending on what is most suitable, although all of our work is highly participative and engaging. We take live tasks/behaviours which are perceived to be weak, identify and work on areas for improvement and play things through until confidence and performance are transformed. Impact on others Programme What transforms the performance of people is the impact of other people! As a manager you are other people. Business if full of examples of how the impact of people on people brings great results or really bad results. Getting great results means making a great impact. The impact of optimistic and positive management and leadership on operational performance, staff morale and customer service is amazing. We’re not talking about “ain’t life great, smile and the world smiles with you”, stuff. Being realistically optimistic and positive are powerful managerial strengths and skills. They are fundamental to leading others, getting the best from people and maintaining a sense of personal well being, as well as developing the skill and resilience to combat negative and defeatist behaviours and thinking in others. Being realistically optimistic and positive in a professional environment aren’t personal traits, they are managerial strengths, powerful influences on others, they generate respect and confidence and crucially, are based on learned knowledge and practiced skills. The Goals of the Impact on Others Workshops are to learn the knowledge and skills to: - • Have a lasting and powerful, positive impact on the performance of others and yourself • Know how to develop these skills in others • Respond positively to negativity, defeatist and obstructive behaviour • Inspire and lead others to greater levels of performance Impact on others: Taking up a new role One to one Management Development Modules This programme is also available as a series of one to one modules designed to support a manager as they take control of a new team or department. The goals and content of the programme remain the same i.e. to have a powerful influence on people and events right from the start of a new role. The format and timings for the programme are flexible and constructed around the manager’s work schedule. The programme starts with a 3 hour foundation workshop which takes place before or within the first week of the manager taking up their new responsibilities. This is followed by seven weekly 2 hour workshops. The aim is to develop the skills needed to have a big impact on people and business results during the most vital period of any new role i.e. the first 100 days. The modular programme is dynamic in that it speeds up the process of integration into a new role. The new tools and techniques learned can be applied immediately to business situations. I’ll often be your first point of contact with McEwan Associates and I’d be very happy to come and see you or have a chat over the telephone about your organisation’s training needs. Very often people come to us when they don’t know what they want but they are absolutely sure of their objectives. This is great as it means that together we can look at the most effective way to achieve your goals and if that means doing something which has never been done before – well even better! I develop many of our programmes in collaboration with other Associates and also deliver workshops. Along with Barbara Thorn, I’m also responsible for carrying out our Personal Impact Coaching. I love my work and am passionate about helping our clients to achieve their goals in the most effective and lasting way possible. As far as I’m concerned no amount of effort is too much. One of the things that I like most about my work is the relationships that we have with each other as Associates and with our clients. We’re lucky enough to have excellent relationships with both and this makes our work even more enjoyable. Although meetings and the running of programmes frequently take me all over the UK, I love our Dorset offices. Our newly converted Mill in the middle of the Dorset countryside is such a positive place to work and the calm peaceful environment surrounded by nature really helps us to focus and to be creative. Journalists can be ruthless in their search for a story and conduct interviews with motivations which may differ from those of the interviewee. We make our clients comfortable with the medium to be used (film, radio, tape) and help them to control the process. By using a team of experienced interviewers we prepare clients for the experience of being interviewed. We show them how to make the most of publicity opportunities and how to avoid making negative or damaging comments. Case Studies Top tips Contact us Search Professional Insight Coaching Whereas personal impact work focuses on behaviours, professional insight work challenges the way that individuals think and feel in given situations. It helps give them insight into their own behaviours and that of those around them and, as a result, enables them to make better decisions and take actions which increase their effectiveness. Our professional insight coaching and training is carried out by Graham Hedley who provides people with the psychological skills to help them develop quickly. Why is developing psychological skills so important? Because thought always takes place before behaviour and behaviour is how other people experience us, also becoming more effective, influential and happier doesn’t happen by chance it takes knowledge, skills and action. Psychological skills improve your ability to motivate and inspire yourself, influence others, understand complex and difficult situations and people. To make better decisions and respond to events in ways that are likely to improve them rather than make things worse, and finally but more importantly help you get more enjoyment out of life. Much of our professional insight work is done with individuals through one-to-one coaching. Graham’s approach to coaching is very straightforward. Professional insight coaching has one overall purpose; to improve performance and personal well-being. Most people have objectives for their coaching and Graham adds his own to their list. His goals are: - To support the person to achieve their objectives in the shortest possible time To build the personal strengths that are proven to be the most important in contributing to success. These include personal resilience, well founded self confidence and self belief, emotional control and empathy To teach the coachee to use the tools that he has used with them, so they can help themselves and others in the future To develop the skills to interpret business situations accurately and then be able to make the sort of on-the-spot decisions that are needed to get better results Everyone enjoys the process Coaching Philosophy Graham believes that coaching is always practical and must recognise that everyone is different and have different needs. As a result his approach broadly encompasses a range of coaching disciplines and is not based on a single coaching method. Good time management is about understanding your own behaviours and mindsets so that you may discover more effective ways for you to prioritise and more expedient ways to communicate. Our approach is practical, interactive, hugely effective and measurable. What’s more people really enjoy it! Each programme carefully combines the right mixture of personal analysis, theory and analytical tools. There are four key steps to improving time management effectiveness: The completion of time management questionnaires to assess delegate needs - three to four weeks prior to the workshop. The completion of a one day activity log, filled in manually throughout the course of a day. This is done in advance of the workshop. A one day interactive workshop A five to six week follow–up coaching session with either a line manager, an HR representative, a buddy or, for an additional fee, a McEwan Associates team member. By the end of the workshop each participant will have identified their development needs and created an immediately usable action plan. The follow-up health check ensures that delegates don’t simply raise their awareness and decide not to implement the required changes because they don’t have time! In order to achieve clarity of thought and speech we need to supply oxygen to our brain. The next time you experience this just exhale and then breathe in. All of your information will come flooding back. Tip #2 The more you try to stop saying “uhm” the more you’ll do it. We say uhm when what we really need to do is take a breath so that we can regroup our thoughts. Next time you say uhm make yourself take a breath straight afterwards. You’ll find that you soon stop saying uhm as you’ve replaced it with the breath that you actually needed. Tip #3 Try to look at everyone that you’re speaking to at some point. Work the room with your eyes and then everyone will feel as if you’ve been looking and speaking to them personally even if you can’t make one person out from another. Tip #4 If you suffer from a dry mouth when you’re nervous try gently dropping your jaw. It kick starts your saliva glands – problem solved! Tip #5 Rather than concentrate on being louder, try thinking of it as increasing your intention to get your message across. If you really intend those listening to understand your message then you’ll put more vocal energy into the delivery. One of the benefits of this is that it will make you louder. Tip #6 If your hands shake when you present – hold something heavy Tip #7 If you want to practice making your point with greater clarity, write down the question that the other person would be asking you in order for you to give them that piece of information. ©2007 McEwan Associates Ltd by mattbray.com Cookies | Contact",9);arrFiles[69]=new Array(70,"._top-tips.htm","14 Jan 2008","._top-tips.htm","","","",48);arrFiles[70]=new Array(71,"what-do-people-say.htm","10 Jan 2008","McEwan Associates - What do people say about us?","Personal Impact, Presentation Skills training, Improving your impact, Actors in business, Drama based training, Role play, Forum theatre, Inspirational presentations, Behavioural training, Values, Equality and diversity, McEwan Associates, Leadership, Ma","McEwan Associates Ltd. Margaret and her team are highly skilled at bringing enthusiasm and encouraging participation from everyone on the course and this is a welcome addition to our portfolio of in-house courses. Sharon Bancroft Learning & Development Adviser Eversheds The team were not convinced that this was going to be the best use of their time, which was one reason why I decided to join the course too. How wrong we were! The combination of personal challenge and a fun environment meant we all improved our networking skills. A different day but one that had real value. Interesting and fun...a good learning environment. Their ability to motivate us to learn in a fun way was superb. Geoff D Bailey Vice President & General Manager - Primary Care Schering Health Care Ltd This team brings some obvious benefits from their training as actors which is matched by their impressive insight into behaviours. We wanted to focus on the practical application of valuing people within our workplace and to raise awareness of the benefits of embracing diversity. What they produced enabled all of us to explore our own ideas and theories as well as our concerns and blind spots in a safe, inspirational environment. The programme has inspired positive change throughout the whole spectrum of the organisation. Jane Knight – Head of Learning and Development -The Law Society The personal impact coaching sessions firstly gave me an opportunity to talk about those situations where I felt my effectiveness as a manager could be improved, then I was able to practice the techniques we had talked about in role play situations to ensure that my objectives had been achieved. Since attending PIC, I have arranged for others in my team to attend personal impact sessions to assist their specific personal development needs. Team Manager – The Law Society There is no doubt in my mind about the power of Forum Theatre to engage meaningfully with employees - when done well there is little they can do to avoid getting themselves involved in the activity! And once they are involved, they contribute and learn. PRM has used McEwan Associates under the enthusiastic and competent guidance of Margaret herself to use Forum Theatre to great effect for its clients. I look forward to working with Margaret and her team again. Harish Bhayani FRSA Principal Proactive Reputation Management Diversity and culture change consultancy, training & benchmarking services From a distance of seven years the benefits of Margaret \'s presentation training remain. For me, the dual facets of Margaret \'s approach have been the key to its effectiveness. On a physical level the practice of breath control and focus on vocal intensity, together with the disciplines of maximising my ability to deliver at the top of my range has emphasised the need to be physically prepared for effective speaking. On a mental level, the practice of searching for multiple delivery paths for the same message has added spontaneity to my presentations and fostered better rapport with my audience. She \'s a cracker! Stephen Williams Fund Manager McEwan Associates are a delight to work with. Professional, efficient and enthusiastic they remained clearly focused on the training objectives and delivered great results.
